Working For The Disney Dollar: How My Story Got Refused Three Times And Then Hailed With Praise

Ik heb alle pagina's nog. Ze zitten in een dossier, getiteld "Piraten Ellende" en het zal u duidelijk worden waarom.

In april 2001 stuurde ik een 10-pagina verhaal op, bestemd voor "Katrien", de vrouwelijke tegenhanger van "Donald Duck".

Het onderwerp was "Piraten", maar ook "Klein Zangeresje" (een verhaal met twee onderwerpen is interessanter, en op het einde komen de onderwerpen toch wel bij elkaar). Helaas, de redactie vond het niks voor "Katrien", want Katrien handelde in het verhaal niet echt als een vrouw. Ze vonden haar meer een travestietenversie van Donald. (Dat waren niet echt hun termen, maar daar kwam het wel op neer).

I still have all the pages. They are in a file named "Pirate Misery" and you will understand why.

In april 2001 I proposed a 10 page story for the magazine "Daisy", the female counterpart of "Donald Duck".

The subject was "Pirates", and also "Young Girl Singer" (Two subjects are better than one, and in the end the two will meet anyway).
Alas, the editors thought it wouldn't suit "Daisy", as Daisy did not act like a real woman in the script. They considered her more like a transvestite version of Donald. (Not really their words, but certainly their thoughts).

It started like this:

De oplossing lag voor de hand, leek me. Als het zoveel op een Donald-scenario leek, dan doe ik een Total MakeOver en verander alle Katrienen in Donalds, alle Juultjes in Kwikken, enzovoort. Flink wat werk, maar een 10-pagina verhaal is een enorme investering qua tijd, dus zoiets gooi je niet achteloos in de prullebak.

The solution was not hard to find, I thought. If it resembled a Donald story so much, I could do a Total MakeOver, changing all Daisies into Donalds, every niece into a nephew etcetera. A lot of work, but a 10 pager is a huge investment in time, so I couldn't throw my work into the waste basket.

Helaas, ze vonden het nog steeds niks. De piraten waren geen echte piraten en ze veranderden veel te snel van slechterikken in braverikken. Aangepast dus! Er ging steeds meer tijd in zitten, dus veel keus had ik niet. De piraten werden kil en harteloos en hadden er deze keer zelfs reuze lol in om te zien hoe de hele familie Duck langzaam maar zeker naar de zeebodem zonk...

Nogmaals helaas. De redactie bleef nog killer en hartelozer dan de piraten en stuurde weer een van hun gevreesde weigeringsenveloppen.

Zo bleef de situatie tot in april 2005. Toen had Disney het tweede deel van een succesvolle piratenfilm klaar om in nederland uit te brengen en kreeg ik een mailtje: "Zeg Evert, jij had toch een piratenverhaal liggen? Dat zouden we goed kunnen gebruiken voor ons speciale Piraten-nummer!"

En prompt werd mijn verhaal van inmiddels 12 bladzijden aangekocht.

Ik weet nog steeds niet wat ik ervan moet denken, behalve dan dat ik het jammer vind dat de actie-intro gesneuveld is. Vraag me niet waarom, want het duizelt me intussen een beetje.

Alas, they still spat upon it. My pirates were not real pirates and they changed much too quick from meanies into goodies.

Let's do another round of adaptations! It cost me more and more time, so I hadn't much choice.

My pirates became cold and heartless and this time they shook with laughter seeing the entire Duck family sink slowly to a watery grave...

Alas again, the editors stayed even colder and heartlesser than the pirates and once again they sent me one of their feared refusal envelopes.

The situation did not budge until april 2005. At that time Disney had their sequel of a successful pirate movie ready to present in the Netherlands and i received a mail: "Say Evert, didn't you have a pirate story lying around? We really could use it for our special Pirate edition of the magazine!"

And without more ado my story, that had become a 12-pager in the meantime, was sold.
I still don't know what to think about it, except that I regret my action intro that got lost. Don't ask me why, as my head is spinning.
