Alles kan altijd beter, dat is het hele idee achter de westerse beschaving en wie ben ik om dat tegen te spreken?
Ik vond mijn Midas-scenario met de stafkaart hilarisch, maar nee, de redactie had er grote problemen mee.

Everything can be improved upon. This is the bright idea behind the whole Western civilisation, so who am I to contradict?
I thought my story about Zeke doing a topographic map was hilarious, but the editors saw big problems with it.

"Hier zitten aardige vondsten in, maar je gaat veel te ver in je absurdisme", stond er op de eerste bladzij van de copieen die ik terug kreeg.
En: "Midas zou nooit zeggen dat zijn bos het mooiste bos ter wereld was". Ik begreep niet goed waarom niet. Je wilt nu eenmaal graag dat je woont op de mooiste plek ter wereld. Zelfs nederlanders houden van hun moeras.

Bladzij 3 met het meten van de bomen en de val van Midas was volgens de redactie ook veels te overdreven, en duurde te lang. En het bouwen van een flatgebouw binnen een week kon echt niet. De jonge lezertjes weten precies hoe lang het bouwen van een flatgebouw duurt, dus daar zouden ze brieven over krijgen, die dan weer beantwoord zouden moeten worden. En dat geeft me een rompslomp!

De eindopmerking van Thom was: "We maken verhalen over wolven in tuinbroeken met menselijke eigenschappen, maar met dit verhaal verlies je wel 'alle realiteit' uit het oog. Te weird. Kan als DROOM, maar zo niet!"

Nu weet ik dat de droomconstructie de zwakste scenario-constructie is die er bestaat. Thom zelf had me er ooit nog eens op gewezen toen hij een scenario van me op het droom-thema had afgekeurd. Nu was dat geen bizar verhaaltje met als slot "Haha! Het was maar een droom!", maar een flink doorwerkt "droom-in een droom-in een droom"-geval. Zoiets bekoelt flink, dus haalde ik het sindsdien niet meer in mijn hoofd om met dromen aan te komen. Maar nu hij het zelf voorstelde, kon ik zonder zorgen aan de slag.
Een andere leuke begingrap op het thema "kaart", een eindgrap op hetzelfde thema en hop, publiceren maar!

"It has some pretty good ideas, but you are going too far in your absurdism", they wrote on my returned copies.
And: "Zeke would never say that his forest is the most beautiful forest in the world".
I did not see why not. Everybody wants to believe that he's living in the most beautiful place on earth. Even the Dutch love their marshlands.

Page 3, where Zeke measures the trees and falls was far too overdone, according to the editors, and anyway the scene was too long. Apart from that, constructing an apartment building in one week was quite impossible. The young readers would know exactly how much time it takes to construct an apartment building, so the editors were sure to get buried beneath an avalanche of letters. And be obliged to answer every one of them. The horror!

The last remark by Thom was: "We do stories about wolves in garden pants with human qualities, but with this story you lose all reality. It's too weird. It would be possible as a DREAM, but not straight!"

I happen to know that the dream construction is the weakest story construction that can be. Thom himself had pointed it out once before, when he rejected a dream theme scenario I had done. It wasn't even a sloppy weird story with an ending like: "Ha, it was only a dream!", but a solid "dream-inside-a-dream-inside-a-dream" thing.
Refusals cool a man off, so ever since I never even dreamed of proposing dreams. But now that Thom suggested it himself, I could get going without a worry in the world.
I found a great introductory joke with "maps" (Zeke takes a world map for an abstract painting) and an ending on the same subject and hop, sold and published!
