We Love Popperdeklop

====================

The town with the longest name is... no, not the well known Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgog... etcetera, it is Bangkok!

The full name of Bangkok is: (take a breath) "Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit".
And the meaning of this is:
"City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Visvakarman at Indra's behest".

There are other villages and towns with interminable names, and of course one day I had to do a story on this phenomenon.

(I Saw My Baby Gettin') Floppy

====================

This story is already a curiosity. In the '90s the editors wanted to move with their time and encouraged me to use modern things in my Duck stories, like CDs and (gulp!) computers.
Computers were pretty new at the time, and I remember one of my first computer plots was refused, with a commentary like: "Maybe our kids will understand this story, but we certainly don't appreciate".
Anyway, eventually everything fell in place and I did other stories that were accepted.
Like this one, where Magica DeSpell turns herself into a... floppy disc!
Who remembers floppy discs? They could contain no less than 1.4 Megabytes! Incredibly practical!
To get her out of Duckburg's central computer, the nephews make her the subject (or rather victim) of a video game, which was another thing parents did not appreciate at all at the time.
(In fact, I was convinced I never did stories with Magica, as I find the character much too one-dimensional, but lo, I did!)

High Heels, Low Heels And Mustaches

Mijn excuses. Ik teken zelfs personages met vijf vingers!
Ik schaam me diep...

====================

In the same vast and more or less complete Geradts archives I found one of my all-time favorite stories: The Mustache War. Partially inspired by Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", where he talks about a war between High-Heelers and Low-Heelers. It seems this was a parody on the political parties in Great Britain in his days.
Dull? Something only historians can appreciate? Of course not, the phenomenon is universal and we see it happen all the time. No need to give examples.
The inspiration for the bank notes glued to stone? I don't know. I was a voracious reader, but now my memory trickles like a sieve...
My art is from 27 years ago, so it doesn't roll along like it does in recent years. I am sorry. I even draw characters who have five fingers!
Is my face red...

The End Of The World

For me, the "End Of The World is Near" is a theme from 1950's cartoons. But in fact, it dates back to medieval or even biblical days (and nights).
This story was inspired by the survivalist movement in the USA, whose members prepare themselves very seriously for tough days (and nights).
The art is by Vicar, who is one of my top Duck artists.

Sibling Rivalry

====================

I found this one in a french issue of "Super Picsou Géant".
A little story goes with it: in my first version, Uncle Scrooge wanted his money from Grandma Duck, and it was the clumsy Gus Goose who interacted with the Beagle Boys.
The editors found this too heartless, even for Uncle Scrooge. In Holland Scrooge and Grandma are brother and sister, and even miserly Scrooge would never do this to his own sister. I thought that rather funny. At the time I was in the middle of a family fight over the family heritage and I saw worse things between us siblings.
Thom the editor proposed to replace Grandma by a second cousin with a different farm and a different family. No Gus Goose, no known characters, no extra family drama...
