Shocking Story

Ik doe veel techniek en wetenschap in mijn scenario's, maar zo'n simpel onderwerp als "electriciteit" had ik nog niet gedaan met Midas. Hoog tijd, temeer omdat het mijn vaders beroep was en Midas me vaak aan hem doet denken. Ik ben dol op die vader-zoon relatie in de wolvenstrips.
Maar in dit scenario komt Wolfje pas in de laatste acte het toneel op, dus hier spelen die relatiedrama's niet zo.
Ik stel me natuurlijk graag voor dat mijn vader er om gelachen zou hebben, maar in feite vond hij strips maar ingewikkeld om te lezen. Hij vatte dat mengsel van plaatjes en tekst niet, en hield zich bij boekenlezen, waar hij dol op was.

I put lots of science and technology in my stories, but I never yet did a simple subject like "electricity" with Zeke. High time, especially since this was my father's profession and Zeke often makes me think of him. I am very fond of this father-son relationship in the wolf comics.
However, in this story Li'l Bad Wolf appears only in the last act, so this time there is not much relational drama.
Of course I imagine gladly my father being amused by this story, but in fact he found comics too complicated to figure out. He didn't get their mix of text and drawings, and stuck to reading books, which he really enjoyed.

I did put Zeke in a car once, but never on a horse.
In this story a countess projects her ideal of a simple, strong and sexy woodsman on Zeke.

Howling At The Moon

Ik vraag me af of ik de eerste ben die een Midas Wolf-scenario op het weerwolventhema heeft geschreven. Denk maar niet dat ik het ga nazoeken.
Volgens Thom is het wat aan de lange kant, maar dat is enkel omdat Midas een soort B-character is, die dus mijn onvoorwaardelijke sympathie heeft.
Hetzelfde verhaal met Donald zou nooit zo'n commentaar krijgen.
Want het loopt heerlijk: een grap aan het eind van pagina 1, een gemeen Wolfje, een harteloze Midas, ze gaan voor het eerst van hun leven naar de bioscoop, ("Een groezelig laken? Moeten we daar een uur lang naar gaan kijken?"), Midas staat voor een ethisch dilemma... Wat wil een mens nog meer?

I wonder if I'm the first one who wrote a Big Bad Wolf story with the werewolf theme. Don't think I'll try to find out.
According to Thom, the editor, it was rather long, but that is based on Zeke's B-character status, which makes him unconditionally sympathetic to me.
The same story with Donald would never get the same comment.
Because it runs like a charm: a punchline at the end of page 1, a mean Li'l Bad Wolf, a heartless Zeke, they go to the cinema for the first time in their lives, ("A filthy bedsheet? Looking at a filthy bedsheet for over an hour?!"), Midas has to make a hard ethical choice... What more can you want?

Torture Instrument

In Frankrijk wordt iedereen klus-expert. In Holland kon ik net een spijker in een plank slaan, en in Frankrijk bouwden we douches, toiletten, zoldervloeren, verandas en zelfs twee zwembaden.
Allemaal heel inspirerend voor scenario's. (En ik kan garanderen dat de technische details van dit Midas-verhaal volledig correct zijn.)

In France, everyone becomes a DIY expert. In Holland, I just knew how to drive a nail into a plank, that's all, and in France we built shower stalls, toilets, attic floors, loggias and even two swimming pools.
All this is very inspiring for stories. (And I can guarantee that the technical details in this Zeke story are completely correct.)

Weer zo'n fijn Midas-verhaal, waaraan ik zoveel plezier beleef bij het schrijven.
De inspiratie kwam van de Californische bosbranden die elke zomer verwoestender worden.

Deadheads And Suckers

Er zijn niet veel scenaristendagen bij Donald Duck, maar als er eentje is, dan wordt er wel hout gesneden. Zo verzuchtten Thom en Frans eens dat ze altijd hetzelfde Midas Wolf-scenario aangeboden kregen: Midas heeft een plan om de biggetjes te vangen, hij gaat naar hun huisje, er komt iets tussen en het plan mislukt jammerlijk. Ik moet zeggen dat ik dat melodietje ook heel veel gefloten heb. Het laatst hier geposte scenario is er een uitstekend voorbeeld van.
Maar er is meer gaande in het bos waar hij woont, en daar wilden ze ook wel eens verhalen over. Het bos wordt "bewoond door lapzwanzen en nietsnutten die geen cent te besteden hebben in een vrijwel niet bestaande economie". (Of woorden van gelijke strekking)
Dat is natuurlijk een wat moeilijker basis om verhalen op te bouwen. Of een wat moeilijker accoordenschema, om in de muziek-analogie te blijven. Of eigenlijk helemaal géén accoordenschema.

There weren't many storywriter's meetings at the magazine, but when there was one, we didn't waste time.
I remember one meeting where the editors Thom and Frans sighed that every writer proposed the same Zeke Wolf scenario. One that goes as follows: Zeke has a bright idea to catch the pigs, he goes to their little house, something goes wrong and his fine plan goes awry.
I must admit that I often whistled that same song. The story I posted yesterday is a fine example.
But there are other things going on in the woods where Zeke lives, and the editor team would like to receive some stories based on a wider vision. The woods are "inhabited by slackers and wankers who do not have a single penny to spend in an almost non-existant economy". (Or words of similar meaning), they said.
Of course, this is a slightly more difficult base to construct stories upon. Or a more difficult chord progression, to follow the music analogy. Or in fact no chord progression at all.

Midas - soja

Met Midas Wolf oogst ik hier in Frankrijk de meeste bewondering. De fransen staan paf: die wolf die alleen maar achter de biggetjes aanzit? Maar daar is toch zeker ALLES al mee gedaan?!
Bij dit verhaal had ik het drieste plan om het onmogelijke te doen: Midas die de biggetjes WERKELIJK opeet!
Het kan natuurlijk niet, maar het moest er wel zo dicht mogelijk bij in de buurt komen. Mijn oplossing was soja-vlees.

My Zeke Wolf stories bring me the most "prestige" here in France. The French are baffled: just a wolf that chases pigs? Surely EVERY variation must have been done already!
With this story I had the bold idea to do the impossible: Zeke REALLY eating the pigs
Of course it can't be done, but it had to be as close as possible. My solution was soy-meat.

In de eerste versie was het geheel wat overtuigender, want ik liet de biggetjes de soja-lekkernijen klaarmaken in de vorm van de klassieke gebraden biggetjes:
