Brotherly Love

====================

Another Zeke in french boulevard theatre situations. His brother will be incarcerated, but Zeke is convinced that he is going off to do some serious misdeeds, and he admires him for it.

Zeke's Square Dance

====================

Time for one of my favorite Zekes! This one is from a long, long time ago.
I am a sucker for living optical illusions, like the famous man on an ostrich, or the female dancer with a gorilla.
Here Zeke pulls one off.
I see now that I did a lot of sketching, as I was sure the rendering artist would do everything to spoil the gag. But I think the final result wasn't so bad after all.

The final result looks sufficient, but my criticism this time is that the story is indexed at INDUCKS under the title "Driekwarts maat", which loses my original wordplay "Driekwarts maal" (maat = beat, maal = meal, while "driekwarts maat" is the beat of a waltz).

Midas Mercator

====================

Everything can be improved upon. This is the bright idea behind the whole Western civilisation, so who am I to contradict?
I thought my story about Zeke doing a topographic map was hilarious, but the editors saw big problems with it.

====================

"It has some pretty good ideas, but you are going too far in your absurdism", they wrote on my returned copies.
And: "Zeke would never say that his forest is the most beautiful forest in the world".
I did not see why not. Everybody wants to believe that he's living in the most beautiful place on earth. Even the Dutch love their marshlands.

Page 3, where Zeke measures the trees and falls was far too overdone, according to the editors, and anyway the scene was too long. Apart from that, constructing an apartment building in one week was quite impossible. The young readers would know exactly how much time it takes to construct an apartment building, so the editors were sure to get buried beneath an avalanche of letters. And be obliged to answer every one of them. The horror!

The last remark by Thom was: "We do stories about wolves in garden pants with human qualities, but with this story you lose all reality. It's too weird. It would be possible as a DREAM, but not straight!"

I happen to know that the dream construction is the weakest story construction that can be. Thom himself had pointed it out once before, when he rejected a dream theme scenario I had done. It wasn't even a sloppy weird story with an ending like: "Ha, it was only a dream!", but a solid "dream-inside-a-dream-inside-a-dream" thing.
Refusals cool a man off, so ever since I never even dreamed of proposing dreams. But now that Thom suggested it himself, I could get going without a worry in the world.
I found a great introductory joke with "maps" (Zeke takes a world map for an abstract painting) and an ending on the same subject and hop, sold and published!

Eating Dogs In China

====================

Another instructive example of something I forgot. Anyway, instructive it was.
Zeke has another encounter with a dog and I had a lot of fun with a scene where the other scoundrels neutralize it in an instant. Which is the opposite of what Zeke wants.

====================

Before sending the story, I toned down one panel, as I feared it was too violent. But for the rest, I was rather sure of the product.

====================

Big surprise. I had made a capital error, as Zeke eats pigs, but Br'er Bear doesn't. Neither does Br'er Fox.
I had never given it a thought. For me, meat is meat. But Br'er Fox eats rabbit and Br'er Bear is crazy about honey. And Br'er Buzzard prefers fowl, such as a fat turkey. Thom, the editor, knew all that, but I didn't.

So I changed the whole story, starting with page 3 and it became even funnier. Maybe not the ending, but anyway, the editors would never have kept the joke about eating dogs in China.

Square Of Disguise Equals Zero

====================

This is a real oldie.
I am a sucker for those theatrical constructions like someone who is disguised as someone who is disguised.

And Whether Pigs Have Fins

====================

Looking for yesterday's story I fell nose first in a big Zeke file. Holland is a rainy country, so there:

RoadShitter

=====

One of the first stories I ever wrote, before I did Disney stuff, was about a RoadShiiter. A huge machine that did not shit on the road, but that shit complete roads.
Recently, Wilbert Plijnaar showed me a video that proved that at last my invention had been realized in Holland.
I remembered that in the meantime I had used the same invention with Zeke Wolf.
I dug it up in the Geradts archives and it was only three pages, with quick & simple sketchwork.

Shocking Story

====================

I put lots of science and technology in my stories, but I never yet did a simple subject like "electricity" with Zeke. High time, especially since this was my father's profession and Zeke often makes me think of him. I am very fond of this father-son relationship in the wolf comics.
However, in this story Li'l Bad Wolf appears only in the last act, so this time there is not much relational drama.
Of course I imagine gladly my father being amused by this story, but in fact he found comics too complicated to figure out. He didn't get their mix of text and drawings, and stuck to reading books, which he really enjoyed.
