The Beagle Boys Take A 9 To 5 Job!

====================

By far the most difficult assignment the Duck editors ever gave me.
"Write a 10 page story about "The New Working System".
I read the briefing and I had some explanations by telephone and after that I understood that the "The New Working System" means that in buildings of big corporations nobody has his own desk any more. You just join a common work room or you work at home.
To sell this new system lofty words were used, like "autonomy, independence, output guidance, trust, responsability..."
The worst of it was the fact that it would be published in a propaganda booklet by Sanoma itself and for other businesses that would apply this new system, so the phenomenon had to be treated in a very positive way. I couldn't show an Unca Scrooge overly enthusiastic because his overhead on office buildings would all but disappear.
Thom, the editor, who would "Work New" himself, gave me an idea that I could have The Beagle Boys burgle an office, where, to their amazement, they would find nothing of value, like no computers at all. This hardly inspired me, as an office building is much duller than a bank, but a role for The Beagle Boys did please me. If that "New Working System" was really so great, than even the Beagle Boys could be converts!
I rolled up my sleeves, applied all the enthusiasm of the briefing, and more.

Clarabella Meets Bad Pritt!

Waarschijnlijk allebei.

====================

I had Clarabella swooning over famous male film stars before. Or was it Daisy? Probably both.

Swimming In Vegetables

====================

I started this scenario as a reversed version of Barks' swimming pool story.
After all the pool misery Donald starts a vegetable garden in that one. So in my story Donald would construct a swimming pool after lots of vegetable misery. (And of course we know how that will play out...)
But I opted for another ending, as on closer inspection Barks' swimming pool story started with vegetable grief too, so a real inversion was out of the question.
It turned out to be ecological slapstick.

Zeke's Square Dance

====================

Time for one of my favorite Zekes! This one is from a long, long time ago.
I am a sucker for living optical illusions, like the famous man on an ostrich, or the female dancer with a gorilla.
Here Zeke pulls one off.
I see now that I did a lot of sketching, as I was sure the rendering artist would do everything to spoil the gag. But I think the final result wasn't so bad after all.

The final result looks sufficient, but my criticism this time is that the story is indexed at INDUCKS under the title "Driekwarts maat", which loses my original wordplay "Driekwarts maal" (maat = beat, maal = meal, while "driekwarts maat" is the beat of a waltz).

Football And Extortion

====================

I always have to wriggle every which way to write a football (or soccer) story. The phenomenon leaves me rather cold and so I'll never write a scenario where deft kicks and passes follow each other in rapid progression, all charged with the tension so essential for the real lover of football (or soccer) matches.
I flutter around the essential, being more fascinated by the celebrity of football heroes and such.
In this story I put a nice twist that I hope wil be a surprise for the reader.

(In fact, the editors toned the story down somewhat, to not shock delicate children's souls, or parent's souls too much).

====================

This is the moment of censure.
I don't have the complete works of Barks in my head like before, but I guess he could have permitted himself a little threat of hamster murder.

Scrap Iron

====================

To have Uncle Scrooge crack a safe is a challenge I like. To put Uncle Scrooge in one prison cell with the Beagle Boys in the last story panel, is no run of the mill ending either. So it's a party!
